Archive for May, 2011

We have been involved in so many community events so far this month, it feels like we have been working the entire year on these activities.  I would like to personally thank my staff and agents and their spouses for all of the time and effort they have put in.

Coldwell Banker First Realtors participated in our first ArtWalk on May 6th featuring the work of Bonnie Griffith.  Foot traffic was slow given the weather and wine tasting weekend, but we did get a few people through.  The next ArtWalk will be on Friday, June 3rd.  Stop by and see the work by the students from Walla Walla Community College.  We have lots of parking, so start at Coldwell Banker and then enjoy a leisurely walk to the rest of downtown.

The Balloon-a-thon, sponsored by the Walla Walla Chamber of Commerce as part of the annual Balloon Stampede, was held on Friday May 13th.  Teams participated in a balloon, bike & run to raise money for nonprofit organizations in our community.   The agents & staff at Coldwell Banker First Realtors raised over $500.00 for Shakespeare Walla Walla.   Our team members were Megan Eaton in the balloon, handing off to Shane Harris who rode a tough bike leg with the final hand off to Mike Bruns, who finished with a grueling foot race.   There were six teams competing and we finished in 5th overall.   I was so proud of our group and the fact that all members on our relay team were employed by Coldwell Banker First Realtors.  I believe some of the other teams were dominated by “ringers” brought in just to compete.  In the end it was a really fun event.  Thankfully the weather held on Friday to allow the event and all of the balloons to fly.  Sadly the weather on Saturday and Sunday was not as forgiving.  Even though the balloons didn’t fly on Saturday, there was still a good time to be had out at the fairgrounds with all of the food & merchandise booths, music, friends and more.

The end of February marked the beginning of the renovations on the Powerhouse Theater.  Contractors and volunteers worked 80+ straight days to get the theater ready for the grand opening.  The Powerhouse Theater is the first classic theater to open in Walla Walla and is now available to our community.  It seats 340 guests and is located just north of the Cascade Gas warehouse at 111 N. 6th.  The Power House Theater will be a real asset to the downtown and the Walla Walla Valley as a whole by attracting other professional  theater, music, and entertainment which we can all enjoy in one of the most outstanding new theaters in the Northwest.

The theater doors opened on May 18th to kick off our Shakespeare event with a fashion  show and gala which helped raise money for Shakespeare Walla Walla’s educational program.  Three professional designers and countless local girls & women walked in this fun & exciting show.  Guest dressed in period clothing and masks which was a lot of fun.

The official grand opening of the Theater took place on May 19th with a classic Shakespearean play, Merry Wives of Windsor.  The play, performed by the Seattle Shakespeare Company, ran through May 22nd.    Coldwell Banker First Realtor employees and Realtors volunteered time, housed actors, and promoted the building, play house, and production for the last few months.

BMAC AmeriCorp sponsored a youth fair and concert at Washington Park on Saturday, May 21st in celebration of the 11th anniversary of the Walla Walla Youth Center, located at St. Patrick’s church, downtown Walla Walla.  Coldwell Banker First Realtors hosted a “cake walk” booth giving out prizes and cookies to all of the winners and participants.  The weather held out and there were a lot of kids in the park that day.  It was a fun event.

Written business in the May has been great for Coldwell Banker First Realtors.   Last May we wrote 30 new sales and as of the 20th of May we have already reached that number.   We see a lot of energy in the market and large numbers attending the open houses.   Rates on new mortgages are really low at this point.  Talking with Tim Applebee, owner/manager of Home Loan Center they were able to lock in a VA loan of 4.5%.   It does not get much better.   If you have been on the fence about making a housing change, this is the time to take action.   Inventory is great, rates are low, and owners want to make something happen.   Let us guide you through the process.   Look at our website coldwellbankerfirstrealtor.com for inventory and connections to lending information with the Home Loan Center.
